Smooth out wrinkles and look years younger
The cosmetic effect of Botulinum Toxin Type A (BTX-A) on wrinkles was originally documented by plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Clark, and published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1989. Canadian husband and wife ophthalmologist and dermatologist physicians J.D. Carruthers and J.A. Carruthers were the first to publish a study on BTX-A for the treatment of glabellar frown lines in 1996 (frown lines between the eyebrows). Similar effects had reportedly been observed by a number of independent groups. After formal trials, on April 12, 2002, the FDA announced regulatory approval of botulinum toxin type A (Botox) to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe glabellar lines. Subsequently, cosmetic use of BTX-A has become widespread with many viewing it as less intrusive and/or artificial than other types of plastic surgery. The results of cosmetic procedures vary but can last up to eight months.
Juvéderm Ultra
Quick, safe and non-surgical
One of the newest products to soften deep folds and reduce wrinkles in the face is Juvéderm. The substance is largely hyaluronic acid, a substance normally found in the skin, muscles, and tendons of mammals. Approved in June 2006 by the US FDA, Juvéderm’s prime use is removing nasolabial folds, or “smile lines.”
Juvéderm is popularly used as a lip augmentation agent to plump lips, and to fill in hollow places and scars on the face. All hyaluronic acid facial filler products are eventually absorbed by the body, usually within six to nine months.
Patients, physicians and researchers say expected potential risks and side effects include temporary redness, pain and tenderness during injections, and swelling and bruising at the injection sites. The more serious side effects include immune system reactions that result in facial lumps and bumps known as granulomas, bothersome reactions that are very difficult for physicians to treat.
According to Allergan (Juvéderm’s manufacture), Juvéderm should not be used in patients with severe allergies, particularly those who have allergies to bacterial proteins or patients with a history of anaphylaxis, which is a potentially life threatening hypersensitivity to some drugs and proteins.
Future services may include: Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, IPL therapy.
