Just like aircrafts are inspected before flight, so are their pilots! A Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) is qualified to perform the physical exam, or “flight physical”. Military and civilian pilots must pass this exam to maintain the medical clearance required to operate aircrafts.
While AMEs can issue special medical certificates for conditions proven to be adequately maintained, the disqualifying factors include but are not limited to: bipolar disorder, psychosis, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, substance abuse, other diseases which require the frequent adminstration of medication, or any condition which has the potential to negatively impact one’s abilities.
