CANCER PREVENTION
Skin cancer is primarily preventable and if caught early, it is curable.
The risk of skin cancer accumulates as you expose your skin to sunlight year after year. No better time than now to stop putting yourself at risk. Some effective measures you can take to reduce your sun exposure include avoiding the outdoors during peak sun hours (generally between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.), use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher, wear a hat and protective clothing, wear UV-protective sunglasses, and re-apply your sunscreen at least every two hours.
Certain individuals are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer than others. Some factors that put you at a greater risk include a tendency to freckle or burn, family history of skin cancer, high levels of sun exposure, and radiation therapy. If it is determined that you are at a greater risk, you should visit your dermatologist for a full-body exam annually. Routine personal skin self-exams are helpful in the early dectection of cancer.
